You can get LCD TV wall mounts for televisions made by manufacturers like Fujitsu, LG Electronics, Mitsubishi, Olevia, Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer, RCA, Samsung, Sanyo, Sharp, Sony, Toshiba, ViewSonic, Vizio, Westinghouse and Zenith.
Make sure that your LCD TV is capable of being wall-mounted. There are some early models that were designed to just sit on a table. The way to check this is to see if the box, owner’s manual or specifications in the store mention that it’s VESA Compatible. You may just see the words “VESA mount” as well.
VESA LCD TV wall mounts are those that has been designed to be compatible with the Flat Display Mounting Interface (FDMI) Standard. This standard defines all aspects of the mount dimensions and characteristics. This standard assures compatibility between TV manufacturers of compliant or certified mounting hardware.
Find the right FDMI specification (FPMPMI numbers) on the wall mount that match the VESA numbers on the specifications from your LCD TV and then you’re on you way.
You’ll also want to make sure that the wall mount can handle both the weight of your TV and the weight of the mount. So if it can handle 40 pounds and the mount itself is 2 pounds, then your TV must weight less then 38 pounds if you want to use that wall mount. I’d even suggest not pushing it to the limit but leaving about 5 pounds or more of breathing room.
Your next decision will be if you want to do the work of installing it of if you want to hire a local handyman and electrician to help you. There are a few things to consider.
First, have you done any kind of work like this before? Your LCD TV costs a few bucks, so you want to make sure the job is done right. If it’s done wrong, then you may be out a TV when it crashes to the floor.
Second, do you need to do any electrical wiring? The best way to do the wiring is to put an outlet right up on the wall next to where you plan on mounting it since you can’t run that kind of electical cord through the wall. You can run other wires like those for the audio and video signals through the wall since they’re low wattage but not the power cord. You’ll want to also check with local electrical codes for this. Failing to obey these codes could affect insurance claims, too.
Third, do you have the time? This could be a 1-2 day project in some cases. Do you have the time and patience to do the work? If not, hire a pro.
Good luck with your LCD TV wall mounting, home theater project. We’re sure that you’ll better enjoy your TV viewing experience!
